Insurance
U.S. government regulations (22 CFR S62.14) require that all international students, scholars, and professors in J-1 status (as well as dependents) be enrolled in an approved insurance plan that includes comprehensive medical insurance with evacuation and repatriation coverages, and meets the minimum coverage limits for J-1 status exchange visitors as outlined here. Coverage on such a plan is required at all times while in the U.S. in J-1 status, beginning on the start date of the J-1 program continuing to the end of the J-1 program. There cannot be any breaks or lapses in coverage at any time, regardless of travel out of the U.S. during this time.
